Brian Tidd
Following in the footsteps of many other outstanding athletes, Brian Tidd made his mark in the field events as a member of the Bridgetown Regional High School and Bridgetown Legion track
and field teams. Brian was an athlete who, through hard work, physical skill and determination, excelled in shot put and discus during the 1980s. Brian had many outstanding performances
at provincial high school championships, representing Nova Scotia at the Legion National Championships, Canada Summer Games and an international meet in Florida.
At the district high school track and field meet in 1987, Brian won the shot put ( 4kg ) with a throw of 14.20 meters breaking the meet record, one which still stands today. Successful
performances at the provincial high school championships in the shot put and discus in 1987 and 1988 led to Brian being selected to represent Nova Scotia at the Legion National Track
and Field Championships in Quebec.
In 1989, Brian set a new record in the senior boys’ discus at the district high school track and field meet. His throw of 44.28 meters still stands as the meet record for this event. Brian went on to the Provincial High School Championships where he placed first in the discus and third in the shot put. During the summer, Brian placed second in the discus at a selection meet in Halifax and was chosen to represent Nova Scotia at the Canada Summer Games in Saskatoon. In a strongly competitive field, Brian placed 13th in the” A” finals with a throw of 38.98 meters.
Brian’s successes continued into 1990 when he was selected to represent Nova Scotia at the Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships in Saint John, NB. He placed eighth in the shot put with a throw of 12.69 meters and fourth in the discus with a distance of 43.20 meters. Even though Brian’s performances didn’t win a medal, his distances set Junior records ( age 19 and under ) for Nova Scotia in both events. Brian’s performances in Saint John earned him the right to compete at the World Junior Warm-up Meet ( Sunshine State Games ) in Orlando, Florida where Brian captured the silver medal in the discus, with the gold going to an athlete from Cuba and the bronze to an American athlete. Brian’s throw of 43.64 meters was a personal best which also broke the Nova Scotia Junior and Senior records for this event.
At the Atlantic Coast Games in Halifax in 1991, Brian won the silver medal in the discus with a throw of 38.12 meters. Following this meet, Brian was selected to compete at the Legends of the Plains Meet in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He finished eighthth in the “A” Final of the discus event with a toss of 43.38 meters. Brian’s hard work and effort led to many successes in both the shot put and discus, representing our community and our province with great distinction. We congratulate him on his induction into the Bridgetown Area Sports Hall of Fame.
