Bridgetown and area began developing a swim team in 1970. This first group of swimmers, numbering about fifteen, was ambitious and eager. As the swim club developed, it gained organization, parental support, and elements of funding that helped the Bridgetown Sea Kings become recognized around the province.
Thanks to the dedication and work of a parents’ association formed in 1982, the club steadily grew in competitiveness
and numbers. The team averaged $5,000.00 yearly in fundraising to meet expenses. by 1984, the team numbered fifty-seven. During the summer of 1984, the Sea Kings attended ten provincial meets, winning eight and placing second at two.
At the 1984 Provincial Swim Meet held at Lunenburg, there were six hundred and eighty-seven swimmers
representing eighteen teams. The age range was from six to seventeen years. The Bridgetown swimmers were
encouraged to see so many Bridgetown supporters in the stands cheering for their Sea Kings. At the time there were sixty-four events at the provincial meet and each team was allowed to enter two swimmers for each individual event and one entry for each relay event.
In winning the Provincial swim team crown, the 1984 Sea Kings amassed fourteen first, ten seconds, fourteen
thirds, five fourths, and four sixths to accumulate 324 points. the Sea Kings had defeated their old rivals, the
Bridgewater Barracudas, by eight points.
As well as winning the Provincial Cup, the team broke seven Provincial records and won the High Point trophies
for the 9-10 and 13-14 age groups.
The 1984 Bridgetown Sea Kings were a very special team who worked hard to earn their victory!
