Allen Hume
Allen “Al” Hume attended junior high school in Chester, Nova Scotia. However, he spent his tenth and eleventh grade at Charlottetown Rural High School in Prince Edward Island.
While there, Al was the goaltender for the Charlottetown Junior A team that went to the Canadian finals. They lost the championship game to a strong team from Red Deer, Alberta.
Al returned to Chester High School for his final year and graduated in 1973.
Coming out of high school, Al was a highly sought-after goaltender. He was being recruited by Johnny Bower, a former all-star net minder for the Toronto Maple Leafs who was then scouting for the Leafs, to play for Toronto’s farm team, the Toronto Marlboros. Several university teams had also made offers for Al to attend their schools and to play on their varsity hockey teams. Al’s playing choice was Acadia and the University Axemen. He played for Acadia from 1973 until his graduation in 1976. Al was named the team’s Most Valuable Player in his final year with the Axemen.
When Al arrived at Bridgetown Regional High School in the fall of 1976, he immediately began his coaching career. He coached Senior Boys soccer from 1976 to 1996. During his years coaching the BRHS soccer team, they won numerous district titles, five regional banners, and one runner-up Provincial title. Also during his tenure, the BRHS boys won four Provincial titles. These we in 1980, 1981, 1985, and 1995.
Al also coached Track & Field from 1976 to 1984, specializing in the long jump and high jump events. A number of his athletes won their events at district, regional and provincial track meets.
He was BRHS Senior Boys hockey coach from 1976 to 1984 and spent three years as head coach of minor hockey teams at the Atom and PeeWee levels. Al spent ten years as the goalie coach with AAA Midget and Bantam teams and has conducted several goalie clinics for a number of minor hockey associations.
Al Hume’s athletic ability was not only restricted to hockey as he is also a competitive golfer. He has won two club shampionships at Chester Golf Club and another two at Eden Golf and Country Club.
In 2003, Al was inducted into the Chester Sports Hall of Fame as an athlete for golf and hockey. In 1976, he, along with his Charlottetown Junior A hockey team, was inducted into the Prince Edward Island Sports Hall of Fame.
