Matthew Shaw
As the son of a golf professional, Matthew Shaw was introduced to golf clubs at an early age. It was soon apparent that he was a natural at the game.
Early development of his smooth swing and training, from his father Grodon, on course management were factors on Matthew’s development as an elite golfer.
Matthew began to play in NSGA competitions when he was a young boy, and by the time he had turned eighteen, had acquired six Provincial titles in Midget (73-74), Juvenile (75-76), and Junior (77-78) along with many club-level junior events.
Matthew represented Nova Scotia, and his home course of Eden Golf and Country Club, in several National competitions. In 1976, competing in the Juvenile division, Matthew won the Canadian Juvenile Championship. He displayed the poise and patience of a veteran professional as he won on the third hole of a three-man playoff. In 1977, at the Junior World Championship in California, Matthew finished a very respectable 5th. These are exceptional results for a young man from our small town.
Matthew’s exploits in Junior golf landed him a golf scholarship at the University of North Carolina, where he represented the Tar Heels for over four years. After university, Matthew spent a few years competing in “mini” tours in Florida, where he competed against many golfers who went on to establish PGA careers. The Tommy Armour
Tour and The Space Coast Tour are two such tours Matthew competed in.
Matthew became a club pro in Florida in 1991. In the late 1990s, Matthew returned to Canada to work at Westfield Golf and Country Club in New Brunswick before moving to British Columbia to become the club professional at Fraserview Golf Course in Vancouver, and later at christina Lake Golf Club. Matthew was a respected and sought-after teacher of the game of golf, passing on the wisdom gained from the early training he received form his father.
Matthew continues to enjoy golf recreationally, and fondly remembers his time learning the game at Eden.
